Title:  Manufacturing Aquafeeds in Hawaiʻi – is it feasible?
Description: The aquaculture industry in Hawaiʻi is heavily dependent on shipped commercial feeds that significantly increase production costs. Several studies have demonstrated the potential of locally sourced ingredients for inclusion in aquafeeds. However, the lack of local feed ingredients and commercial feed mill operations contribute to preventing possible expansion of the industry. Past and current efforts to develop local feed formulations and the prospects for the manufacture of aquafeeds in the Pacific region will be discussed.
Presenter: Dr. Armando Garcia-Ortega is an Associate Professor of Aquaculture at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo whose research interests include land-based aquaculture production of local species of marine fish: opakapaka, kahala, hapuʻupuʻu, and ʻamaʻama. For more info, see Armandoʻs bio.
