Autonomous Wave Gliders for Storm Monitoring and Other Applications
Presenter: Vas Podorean, Liquid Robotics
Liquid Robotics has a new vehicle platform, dubbed SV3. Its improvements include wifi & cell modem communications, a solar powered thruster, increased autonomy and a “plug & play” operating system that allows for customers to integrate their own applications much easier. Mr. Podorean will discuss the vehicle and the lessons learned from successfully sending a Wave Glider through Typhoon Rammasun. He will also discuss a partnership with NOAA to monitor hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico and a number of security applications including a surface acoustic detection system and sea-floor to sea-surface gateway communications.
Vas Podorean is the Hawaii Operations Manager for Liquid Robotics. He has roots on Hawaii Island, having attended Waimea Elementary School as a child. He received a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the California Maritime Academy. Before joining Liquid Robotics, he was an engineering watch officer aboard Matson Navigation and Horizon Lines container ships, and was a senior project manager for Griffith Consulting Group, managing large construction projects on Oahu.
