Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, Pacific Aquaculture & Coastal Resources Center (PACRC), located in Hilo, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $2,571/Mon.
DUTIES: Works with PACRC personnel or the Coral Reef Fish Breeding Program to build and operate new and existing aquaculture systems, maintain broodstock facilities, and larval rearing. Conducts research and public outreach. Oversees and trains PACRC student employees, volunteers, and interns. Assists in writing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and keeping them updated and posted. Uses hand tools (e.g., drills, saws, shovels, sanders, screwdrivers, hammer, staple guns, vice grips, channel locks, pipe wrenches, etc.) to build and repair aquaculture systems. Transfers supplies (e.g., fish feed, filled water buckets, lift pumps, and other ancillary equipment) between work areas. Collaborates on research and development for live feeds and marine fish. Obtains required permits and ensures compliance with relevant UH, government safety, and environmental rules and regulations. PACRC Aquaculture Technician II leads team in building and plumbing marine ornamental, food fish research, and production systems, and drives to various sites to pick-up supplies. Must be able to work some nights, weekends, flexible working hours, and/or holidays. Must be able to travel via airplane off island and/or out of state. This is a progression job beginning at Level I. Progression into Level II will be based on employee’s demonstrated ability to meet satisfactory work standards and the ability to assume increased responsibilities and accountabilities.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Aquaculture or related field. EXPERIENCE: (Level I) At least 1 year of direct experience in aquaculture and marine ornamental fish, including live feeds production and broodstock conditioning, installing and managing recirculation aquaculture systems and live feed production systems, including polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plumbing and ancillary equipment, collecting and analyzing data, and maintaining daily logs. Live feeds experience should include: rotifer, artemia, copepods, and algae. (Level II) All items in Level I. At least 4 years of direct experience in marine aquaculture, including live feeds production, broodstock conditioning, and larval rearing, and managing and monitoring water quality in aquaculture systems, and including at least 2 years of experience writing reports, standards of procedures (SOPs), and manuals. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: (Level I) Knowledge of function and operation of pumps, blowers, and common aquaculture equipment. Knowledge of live feeds species including: copepods, rotifers, artemia and oyster larvae. Competency in monitoring and managing water quality in aquaculture systems. (Level II) All items in Level I. In addition, plumbing knowledge including design and construction of recirculating systems. Knowledge of biology and culture of marine fish species. (All Levels) Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation. Ability to multitask, operate in a fast-paced environment, and take a high level of responsibility for achieving project objectives. Ability to construct aquaculture systems, and familiarity with PVC plumbing, carpentry, and installation of aquaculture equipment. Ability to perform hands on modifications and repair systems using generally accepted materials as needed to maintain animal health. Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes, and resolve the full range of problems that may commonly occur in the field of aquaculture. Ability to use basic computer software, such as Microsoft Word. Ability to use hand and power tools to build and repair systems. (Level II Only) Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: (All Levels) Must be able to complete the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Investigators, Staff, and Students, Lab Animal Research course within one (1) month from date of hire. Must be able to complete the Office of Research Compliance (ORC) General Biosafety training within six (6) months from date of hire. Must be able to complete the UH Laboratory Safety training within six (6) months from date of hire. Must be able to complete the UH Title IX training within six (6) months from date of hire. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted. Ability to work and stand continuously under hot, humid conditions.
